Course Overview

This is the third course in a five part series that will provide students with the knowledge to install, configure, administer and troubleshoot Microsoft SQL Server 7.0.

Learn To:

  • Identify the concepts, interfaces and fixed roles involved in performing backups.
  • Gain a working knowledge of database, transaction log and filegroup backups and perform these backups as a system administrator.
  • Restore damaged or incomplete databases.

This course is designed for IT professionals responsible for installing, configuring, administering and troubleshooting Microsoft SQL Server 7.0. Participants should have completed the first two courses in this series.

Unit 1: Backup Concepts

Duration: 2 - 3 Hour(s)
  • Match the backup type with its features.
  • Identify the fixed roles with permission to perform backups.
  • Identify the circumstances that make system database backup necessary.
  • Identify the situations in which Transact-SQL must be used to perform a function.
  • Identify the available media for database backup.
  • Identify activities that cannot be performed while a backup operation is in process.
  • Match the three primary backup devices with their features.
  • Perform the steps necessary to create a temporary backup file.
  • Perform the steps necessary to create permanent backup files.
  • Perform the steps necessary to add multiple files to a backup statement.
  • Match six of the advanced options available in the Transact-SQL BACKUP statement with their functions.
  • Associate the six tape backup options with their functions.

Unit 2: Performing Backups

Duration: 2 - 3 Hour(s)
  • Match the proper full backup frequency with its scenario.
  • Perform the steps necessary to create a full database backup.
  • Identify the scenarios for which differential backup would be appropriate.
  • Perform the steps necessary to create a differential database backup.
  • Identify the features of transaction log backups.
  • Perform the steps necessary to back up the transaction log.
  • Associate the options for clearing the transaction log with their functions.
  • Identify situations in which filegroup backup is preferable to full database backup.
  • Identify situations in which multiple files must be backed up as a unit.
  • Perform the steps necessary to create a filegroup backup.
