This is the fifth course in an eight-part series that will provide IT professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement, administer, and troubleshoot Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional and Server. At the completion of this course, students will learn to identify the lease generation process followed by DHCP, host name resolution process of DNS and the features of WINS; identify and install the DHCP Server service, create DHCP scope, configure DNS and WINS; create dial-up connections to the Internet and remote computers, and connect computers by using a VPN connection; and install, configure and troubleshoot Connection Sharing and access shared resources on a network.

  • Identify the network protocols in Windows 2000, establish a TCP/IP based network, install and configure TCP/IP, NetBEUI and NWLink protocols, and bind network protocols.
  • Identify the lease generation process followed by DHCP, host name resolution process of DNS and the features of WINS.

Unit 1: Windows 2000 Networks

Duration: 2 - 3 Hour(s)
  • Match the features of TCP/IP with the tasks accomplished by them in a specified situation.
  • Identify the features of NetBEUI.
  • Identify the features of NWLink.
  • Match network protocols with the situations in which they are used.
  • Label the elements of a TCP/IP network by placing them in the appropriate position on the displayed network.
  • Match IP address classes with the IP addresses in each class.
  • Identify the valid decimal form of a specified IP address.
  • Identify the number of subnet ids and host ids for a specified network IP address.
  • Identify the gateway address that should be specified in the routing table for a network.
  • Install TCP/IP on Windows 2000 Server.
  • Configure TCP/IP on Windows 2000 Server to use a specified IP address.
  • Identify TCP/IP connectivity problems and their causes within a local network.
  • Match TCP/IP diagnostic utilities with the situations in which they are used.
  • Install NetBEUI on Windows 2000 Server.
  • Install NWLink on Windows 2000 Server.
  • Identify the binding order for protocols in a specified situation.
  • Configure network bindings to specify a protocol as the first protocol in the binding list.

Unit 2: Network Service Components

  • Install DHCP Server on Windows 2000 Server by using Windows Components Wizard.
  • Create a DHCP scope by using Create Scope Wizard.
  • Identify the features of DNS.
  • Match DNS name servers with the situations in which they are configured.
  • Configure DNS Server as a root server by using Configure DNS Server Wizard.
  • Identify the features of WINS.
  • Match each phase of the NetBIOS name resolution process followed by WINS with the activity that occurs in the phase.
  • Install WINS Server on Windows 2000 Server by using Windows Components Wizard.
  • Configure WINS Server to replicate database entries with another WINS Server by using the Replication Partners Properties dialog box.

Unit 3: Network Connectivity

  • Identify the reason for selecting a network connectivity method in a specified situation.
  • Connect to the Internet by using dial-up networking.
  • Connect to a remote computer by using dial-up networking.
  • Connect to a computer by using a VPN connection.
  • Identify the features of Connection Sharing.
  • Match the problems that can arise because of the Connection Sharing design with their solutions.
  • Install Connection Sharing by using the Routing and Remote Access window.
  • Configure the Connection Sharing server.
  • Identify the problems that can occur while trying to implement Connection Sharing and their causes.
  • Create a shared folder on a network by using the Computer Management window.
  • Access shared resources on a network by using Windows Explorer.
