Unit 1 : The Leader (0.5 - 1 hour)
  • Identify the three components of leadership.
  • Identify the actions for enhancing leadership growth.
  • Identify characteristics of effective leadership.
  • Identify the common leadership pitfalls.
  • Simulation Overview: In the simulation at the end of this unit, you are the newly-installed team leader of the HotBox project team. You will meet with the members of the project team to assess the project's current status. The team is two weeks behind schedule and facing a 30-day deadline for the final design specs, so you'll need to get to work quickly. To do so, you need to demonstrate the characteristics of effective leadership and avoid common leadership pitfalls.
Unit 2 : The Follower (0.5 - 1.5 hours)
  • Identify follower attributes that a leader needs to understand.
  • Identify guidelines for preventing communication breakdown.
  • Select the guidelines for effective feedback.
  • Identify the guidelines for empowering followers.
  • Identify the factors to consider to motivate followers.
  • Simulation Overview: In the simulation at the end of this unit, you will provide feedback to the HotBox project team on the work they've done to date and try to empower them to increase their performance and boost their productivity. The team has begun to trust and respect your leadership, but if the meeting isn't handled appropriately, that could change.
Unit 3 : The Situation (1 - 1.5 hours)
  • Identify the distinctions between managers and leaders.
  • Identify the situational factors that affect the behavior of leaders and followers.
  • Identify useful power tactics.
  • Select guidelines for effective delegation.
  • Identify guidelines for setting attainable goals.
  • Categorize strategies for resolving conflict.
