Care assistants, also known as nursing assistants and nursing auxiliaries, help other health care professionals with the day-to-day duties surrounding patient care. Patients may be elderly, suffering long-term sickness, recovering from surgery, have mental health problems, physical disabilities or learning difficulties. Care and nursing assistants work in hospitals, residential care homes, and the community, assisting patients with tasks they cannot manage on their own. Some assistant s visit and support patients in their own homes. In hospitals they may escort patients between hospital departments, assist with treatments or examinations, keep the ward tidy, check and sort supplies and help with paperwork. Care and nursing assistants working with patients, who have mental health or learning disabilities, may generate activities to increase their self-confidence. This can involve shopping trips or outings to leisure facilities. New entrants are trained in areas like: hygiene, health and safety, personal care. Assistants will also be taught how to measure and record temperature, pulse, respiration and weight. Most employers encourage assistants to develop their communication and interpersonal skills, which are essential given the amount of contact assistants, have with patients and their relatives. As a certified care or nursing assistant you are likely to have the opportunity to undertake NVQ/SVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care. This qualification requires you to produce evidence of competence in your role, and an assessor will evaluate your performance in the work place. As each level of NVQ is achieved, your responsibilities at work may increase. In addition, the NVQ level 3 qualification will usually satisfy the entry requirements for a Diploma in Nursing.
