Advanced Project Management: Project Estimating Techniques teaches learners how time-box and analogous estimates are used, how to use life-cycle projections, and how the Modified Delphi method is used. It also teaches how to calculate PERT estimates and how function point analysis and forecasting are used. In addition, it covers how to avoid common estimating mistakes and how orders of magnitude help gauge the accuracy of estimates. Finally, it teaches steps for explaining estimates to stakeholders, how to document estimates, and how to improve them.

Learn To
- Given a set of information, use life-cycle projection to calculate an estimate.
- Calculate PERT estimates.
- Identify the guidelines to follow when estimating.
- Given a situation, identify which order of magnitude of estimate you could complete.
- Arrange in order the steps for explaining estimates to stakeholders.
- Identify information you should document for an estimating database.

Objectives
Unit 1:Time-Box, Life-Cycle, and Delphi Estimates (1 hour)
- Identify the description of a time-box estimate.
- Identify the description of an analogous estimate.
- Identify the life cycles common to most projects.
- Given a set of information, use life-cycle projection to calculate a estimate.
- Given an example, calculate how many days to allot for each project cycle.
- Identify the description of the modified Delphi method.
- Identify differences between the Modified Delphi and original Delphi method.
- Identify how experts' opinions are kept anonymous for the Modified Delphi method.
- Identify when the Modified Delphi method is complete.
- Simulation Overview:
- In this simulation, you are attending a weeklong project management conference. You will meet with Nancy Hurst, an experienced project manager who will ask you a series of questions designed to test your knowledge of time-box, life-cycle, and Delphi estimates. Through her questions and your answers, you'll gain a better understanding of these three estimating techniques.
- Calculate a PERT estimate.
- Identify cautions for using PERT estimates.
- Identify the description of function point analysis.
- Identify what information function points are based on.
- Identify the description of forecasting.
- Identify how forecasting differs from analogous estimating.
- Identify the purpose of function point
