This e-learning program equips the learner with all the knowledge necessary to select, specify, design and implement Instrumentation and Control Systems in Hazardous Areas. These hazardous areas are those locations that contain explosive and flammable liquids, vapors or gases. Such locations are commonly encountered in Oil & Gas, Petroleum refining, chemicals processing and storage, shipping, tank terminals, gas based power stations, etc. The program covers Basic Concepts, Area & Material Classification, Standards used, Methods of protection (including explosion proof, intrinsic safety, increased safety, etc), Fieldbus in hazardous areas, Certification and Maintenance. The program uses extensive graphics, animations and real-life photos and examples to explain this difficult-to-understand subject. The course is available in two versions, Standard & Professional. Both options lead to a certification, if the learner passes the online examination. The Professional version is available online for each student for 4 weeks and comes with a free backup of the course on a CD ROM, which can be retained by the student.

Hazardous Area Instrumentation
Training Program Details
This course is recently updated (July 2010) and is compiled by leading experts in hazardous area classification and instrumentation from all over the world. It is NOT a power point presentation but a FULL e-learning course consisting of Flash based animations and simulations, real life photos from actual process plants, graphics and text. It also has a self assessment test. After completing the course the learner can take an online test, that results in a valued certificate for all learners who pass the test.
The program consists of the following SIX parts.
1. Basic Concepts. This covers all concepts necessary to gain understanding of the topic including flammable materials, flash point, auto-ignition, Lower Explosive Limit & Upper Explosive Limit, Fire triangle, etc.
2. Classification. This covers Area Classification, Material classification, Temperature classification, National & International Standards for classification, Zones, Gas Groups, Divisions, practical guidelines for carrying out area classification, etc with practical examples.
3. Methods of Protection. This is the main part of the course and covers all methods of explosion protection including but not limited to Explosion proof/ Flameproof, Intrinsic Safety (including the entity concept, designing Instrument loops with barriers and isolators), Increased safety, Non-incendive method, Pressurization & Purging, Weather protection (IP and NEMA codes).
4. Fieldbus. This part covers the implementation of a Fieldbus in hazardous areas. This includes concepts like FISCO, etc
5. Certification & Testing. This part covers the certification of instruments that are used in hazardous areas. Includes ATEX guidelines.
6. Maintenance. The integrity of an explosion-protected facility has to be maintained properly. This module gives guidelines and practical hints to do this.
