Using Databases This in-depth course will concentrate on addressing the needs of library professionals using electronic databases. As you progress through the course you will gain a general knowledge of the terminology used in online searching and develop the skills needed to analyze various types of search requests. This foundation will enable you to identify the best method and tools for performing an online search.
You will be given exercises to reinforce your learning experience. At the completion of the course, you will have gained the tools and techniques necessary for developing your online searching skills.

Outcomes At the conclusion of the course, you will be able to meet the following objectives:
  1. Determining the information needs of your patron.
  2. Evaluating database(s) by criteria that match your information needs.
  3. Developing your search strategy in order to access information within online database(s).
  4. Evaluating search results to ensure the patron`s requirements are met.
Assessment This course is self-directed and assessments are graded immediately upon completion. Introduction An introduction to the course objectives and an introduction to the concepts of databases. Determining Information Needs This lesson covers determining the information needs of the patron and the use of research questions, reference information, the Reference Desk Search Request Form, defining topics, and articulating research questions. Where to Find the Information This lesson covers types of databases, database selection, database evaluation, and tips for getting to know databases. How to Find the Information This lesson covers steps in the search process and basic concept blocking. Concept blocking involves a narrative of the search request, concept analysis, selecting concept words and phrases, and determining alternate forms and synonyms for concepts. Evaluating the Success of the Search This lesson presents standards for evaluating the success of a database search and discusses additional search techniques for accomplishing successful searches.
