Harnessing the Internet Anyone who has ever used the Internet knows how vast and confusing this electronic resource can be. Working in a public library, you most likely use the Internet daily, or you have customers who may ask you questions about the Internet. Sometimes you find the Internet very helpful and sometimes not so useful. This tutorial is a basic introduction to the Internet as a reference resource for individuals who work in public libraries. When you have completed this class your Internet searching skills will improve and you will use the Internet more often as a reference resource.

Introduction An introduction to the course objectives. Introducing You to the Web This lesson discusses the historical background of the internet and introduces the student to the internet and the world wide web. Web Browser This lesson provides an overview of web browsers and discusses in more detail some of the more common browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Opera and Mozilla. Searching the Web This lesson provides and overview of internet search engines and provides strategies for conducting successful internet searches. The section covers popular search engines such as Google and Vivisimo. Subject Indexes This section introduces the topic of subject indexes and discusses how librarians can use subject indexes to expedite internet searches. Children and the Internet This section covers issues relating to children and their use of the internet in libraries.
