Full Description
Volunteers: Recruitment, Development, and Supervision In order to manage a volunteer program successfully, supervisors must have a mind set that truly values the work of volunteers. A good management mind set will perceive volunteers as motivated and professional. The volunteers will be perceived as enhancements rather than threats to library jobs and as boosts to staff morale. This course is designed to provide library staff the tools to create and effectively manage a successful volunteer program. This course is for 2 CE credits.


Outcomes:
After this tutorial, you will be able to:
  1. Identify and describe volunteer positions in your library.
  2. Recruit and hire qualified volunteers.
  3. Train volunteers to do meaningful and rewarding jobs.
  4. Supervise, reward, and discipline volunteers.

This course is self-directed and assessments are graded immediately upon completion.

Introduction An introduction to the course objectives and an introduction to the concepts of volunteer work in libraries.
What Can Volunteers Do For My Library? This lesson discusses why people volunteer, how to start a volunteer program, types of volunteers, and how to plan a volunteer position.
How Do I Get the Volunteers I Need? This lesson discusses the steps involved in recruiting volunteers, writing job descriptions, determining volunteer qualifications, designing effective volunteer positions, finding volunteers, interviewing volunteers, and hiring volunteers.
How Do I Prepare My Volunteers for Work? This section covers topics such as general training, specific training, and mentoring, as well as a review of volunteers’ rights and responsibilities.
How Should I Supervise and Evaluate My Volunteers? This section covers the topics of performance evaluations, disciplining and terminating volunteers.
How Do I Offer Recognition for My Volunteers’ Work? This lesson covers rewarding volunteers through recognition events, public recognition, and recognition of outstanding performance.
