Week 1
Week 2
Week 3
Week 4
Week 5
During week one, we will be covering the Privacy Rule. The Privacy rule is the strictest and most important piece of the legislation. The Privacy Rule protects health data in the written, oral, and electronic form, and it has the most impact on the business practices. In addition, the course rules and guidelines will be established.
Week 2 will be a continuation of the Privacy Rule. The legislation of the Privacy Rule cannot be tackled in just one week alone. There are 16 pieces of documentation required by the Privacy rule alone. Students will be able to get to OCR (the enforcement agency), and the ins and outs of how this rule has changed our business practices.
Transactions and Code Sets will be covered. Transactions and Code Sets are hard to divide in HIPAA. They are both so intrinsically intertwined. Transactions and Code Sets have impacted more than just Providers, Payers, and Clearing Houses, it has impacted Business Associates, technology companies, all the way down to medical supplies providers.
In week 4 we will cover the Security legislation. Security only deals with our data as it exists electronically. Purpose of the Security standards is to ensure the confidentiality of healthcare data. It was established in the course of Privacy standards, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data.
To conclude we will be learning about the Unique Health Identifier. The Final Rule adopting the HIPAA standard unique health identifier for health care providers was published in the Federal Register on January 23, 2004. Health care providers can begin applying for National Provider Identifier (NPI) on the effective date of the final rule, which is May 23, 2005. All health care providers are eligible to be assigned NPIs; health care providers who are covered entities must obtain and use NPIs. All HIPAA covered entities must use NPIs by the compliance dates (May 23, 2007 for all but small health plans; May 23, 2008 for small health plans).
