Faculty Introduction to Online Teaching

Training Provided by Online Training Directory Introduction to Online Teaching is a two-week, self-paced online course designed to give you an understanding of developing and teaching online courses. ? This course is designed for faculty, although certainly the premises are the same for K-12 educators, as well.? Those wishing to earn a State Board Continuing Education Unit (SB-CEU) might prefer to enroll in the Intro to Online Teaching for K-12 course, which has already been approved for?one SB-CEU upon completion?with a 70 percent or better passing score. ? This course will: Provide background and path for learning to teach online. Give you the same type of experience your students will have. Show you the importance of engaging students in interactive?experiences. Help you decide the degree to which you want to integrate education technology into your teaching.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

• Understand the pedagogical concepts, trends and?mechanics of online teaching and learning.?
• Recognize the types of learning tools and resources available online.
• Assess your own abilities and interest in?teaching online and?using technology.
• Apply the principles learned in this course to begin creating your own course, if you so choose.

Assessment

Lesson 1 - Introduction to Teaching Online

In this lesson, the history and development of online teaching and learning is discussed along with a number of forms of online instruction.? Also covered are good elements of instructional design and workload estimation.

Lesson 2 - Differences and Similarities

In this lesson, the differences in online versus on-the-ground is detailed along with guidelines for developing and conducting online courses.? Course organization and navigation are discussed along with examples.?

Lesson 3 - Finding and Using Online Resources

This lesson covers online research.? Resources for online research are detailed along with links to online libraries and databases that may be helpful in creating an online course.?

Lesson 4 - Course Management Software

Course management systems and less formal methods used to develop online courses such as websites, links and assessment software are discussed.?

Lesson 5 - Communication Alternatives

Tips to communicate effectively in an online course are covered in this lesson including e-mail and synchronous and asynchronous discussion boards.?

Lesson 6 - Assignment Alternatives

This lesson discusses non-web-based and web-based online assignments online assignments.? The information provided will help you find, evaluate and cite information for your online course.?

Lesson 7 - Assessment Alternatives

Learn to conduct effective assessments.? Test item categories are detailed and information on improving test questions for online assessment and some of the benefits and drawbacks found in online assessments are discussed.
