Full Description

Introduction to Online Teaching is a seven day online course. This course is designed to give you an understanding of online course delivery. It is a basic level course and will prepare you to begin to develop an online course or course supplement. The information we are sharing will hopefully help you engage students and organize classroom material in an online course shell so that navigation is intuitive and learning is not hindered but enhanced by the technology. 

This course is offered by a State Accredited University and offers State Board Continuing Education credits for Michigan teachers.  If you are located in a state other than Michigan, please check to see if your State Board will honor the Continuing Education Credit.  The course provider will be happy to provide you with appropriate documentation.

This course is designed for K12 teachers but the concepts and examples will translate for all online course development.



Outcomes:

After completing this course, you will:

  • have a good understanding of "what" the online classroom can provide.
  • be familiar with the similarities and differences between online learning and traditional learning.
  • recognize the kinds of learning tools available online.
  • be able to assess your own abilities to teach using technology.
  • be able to use the principles learned in this course to create your own course.


Assessment:

Grading Policies:  This course is self-directed and assessments are graded immediately upon completion. Please check your success in the Tools, Gradebook area. Assessments can be re-taken any time during the course. This course allows you to earn 1 SB-CEU which is available to anyone completing the course with a 70% or better passing score.

Lesson 1 - Introduction to Online Teaching In this lesson, you learn about the different forms of online instruction including online supplement courses, online self-paced courses and online instructor-led courses. Basic elements of instructional design are discussed and information and guidelines for estimating the time it will take to convert a traditional on-the-ground course to an online version.
Lesson 2 - Differences and Similarities In this lesson, the differences in online versus on-the-ground is detailed along with guidelines for developing and conducting online courses. Course organization and navigation are discussed along with examples.
Lesson 3 - Finding and Using Online Resources This lesson covers online research. Resources for online research are detailed along with links to online libraries and databases that may be helpful in creating an online course.
Lesson 4 - Course Management Software Course management systems and less formal methods used to develop online courses such as websites, links and assessment software are discussed.
Lesson 5 - Community Alternatives Tips to communicate effectively in an online course are covered in this lesson including e-mail and synchronous and asynchronous discussion boards.
Lesson 6 - Assignment Alternatives This lesson discusses non-web-based and web-based online assignments online assignments. The information provided will help you find, evaluate and cite information for your online course.
Lesson 7 - Assessment Alternatives Learn to conduct effective assessments. Test item categories are detailed and information on improving test questions for online assessment and some of the benefits and drawbacks found in online assessments are discussed.
