You have been hired within the last year as a design engineer at Autorad, a company that manufactures automotive components. Historically, the company specialized in custom-designed components for limited production runs. In recent years, the company has moved into more mainstream applications and must adapt to a mass-production mind-set. Your team has been working on a new steering wheel design for months, which you discover has been sent back by manufacturing for its third round of changes. Manufacturing claims the previous design version could not be produced cost-effectively.
