Basin Analysis and Petroleum Systems

Geological Engineering

HOT Engineering
Training Provided by HOT Engineering This 5 day course covers the theory of basin formation, the controls on, and mechanisms of subsidence and sedimentation, and then looks at examples from around the world of typical basin types. Emphasis is on impact basin style and sedimentation has on the hydrocarbon habitat and prospectivity, offering analogues for use in exploration. Within each basin, depositional systems are reviewed, and their control on reservoir, source, seal and trap are discussed.
This is primarily ilt training

Course Level:advanced
Duration:5 days
Training Presented in:English
Basin Analysis and Petroleum Systems The course reviews a number of techniques used in basin analysis, including an introduction to seismic facies analysis, sequence stratigraphy, correlation techniques and basin modeling.

The course emphasizes the practical interpretation of data for basin analysis, with coursework designed to reinforce the theory lectures and provide access to a variety of data types. Exercises involve interpretation of seismic and wireline log data, with examples drawn from basins around the globe.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

How basins are formed and how the mechanism of formation controls the structural style and sedimentary fill
How to recognize different basin types from typical seismic and well log data
The typical petroleum systems within different basin types
Become familiar with the petroleum systems active on a number of global basins
Be introduced to techniques to analyze sedimentary basins including:
- Seismic facies analysis
- Sequence stratigraphy
- Integration of typical well data
- Critical element diagrams
- Basin modeling

OUTLINE

Mechanism of basin formation
Sedimentary basin classification
Basin analysis techniques (interpretation of seismic and well data)
Review of basin by type:
- Extensional / Rift Basins
- Compressional / Foreland basins
- Passive Margin basins
- Arc type basins
- Strike Slip basins
For each basin type the following is reviewed:
- Structure / Tectonic evolution and controls on deposition
- Typical facies suites and sedimentary environments
- Typical seismic expression
- Petroleum systems
- Type examples

Examples are drawn from North Africa (Libya, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco), Indonesia, Malaysia, North Sea, Australia, Italy, Arabia

During the course, lectures and practical exercises are used to teach techniques to evaluate the basin type and interpretation of seismic and well log data. These cover the fundamentals of stratigraphy, seismic facies analysis, sequence stratigraphy and an introduction to basin modeling.
