Course description:
This class is designed to give students a thorough understanding of the art of mixing both in terms of the overall process and the specific software and hardware tools used to achieve professional results. Emphasis is placed upon the importance of careful listening and the creative use of techniques designed to help students develop their own style. Students will work through real world examples and mix a song in Studio A as an individual project.
Prerequisites:
Although enrollment is open to anyone seriously interested in the field of professional audio production and music recording, students are encouraged to complete Signal Processing with WAVES, Introduction to Pro Tools and Audio Recording Techniques.
What You Will Learn:
How to prepare for a mix session
Approaches to mixing and the importance of listening levels and environment
Historical perspective and different approaches to mixing (hardware vs. in the box )
Understanding and applying mixing concepts: balance, EQ, panning, dimension, dynamics and monitoring
Mix down formats and preparation for mastering
Equipment:
This class will be conducted in the classroom and in Studio A, working on the SSL 400 series console.
