This course takes an interest in helping you learn some simple and effective ways to take advantage of the educational experiences the Internet has to offer without the hassles of unwanted advertising and intruders. How can everyday activities that you perform on your computer and the Internet have dire consequences? There is a myriad of unwanted and uninvited interlopers that can?t wait to make a home or your computer, You should know the dangers and risks that Internet use poses and be aware of preventative tools and best practices to help you avoid these situations on a daily basis.
It is important to defend your computer against malicious threats in the most effective manner possible. This class arms you with the knowledge necessary to protect your computer and have a safe computing environment. In order to do this, the course combines textbook learning with hands-on exercises to give you a well-rounded experience. Enroll in this course to: Identify various threats that affect the computing environment such as viruses, spyware, and phishing. Evaluate security software products, tools, and processes so you can stop viruses in their tracks. Setup and configure software scans and updates for selected software to be sure your system is always providing the best protection. Explain ways to protect your computer against threats through layered security. Instruct your students in ways to keep their computers safe.

This course will teach you the following key components of safe computing:
Assessment
The competencies and performance indicators for this course will be assessed by the student demonstrating learned skills though successful completion of 5 quizzes, exercises and 10 activities which measure retention of knowledge that is communicated in each of the course modules. Instructional time for this course will be a minimum of 10 clock hours (1 PLU). A passing grade of at least 70% must be achieved in order for Mastery Verification to be validated.
Complete Course Outline: This course is made up of five lessons. Each lesson has a reading assignment, exercises, activities, supplemental reading, study questions, and a quiz.Lesson 1 ? Welcome to the Jungle This lesson introduces you the various ways in which your computer can be compromised.Lesson 2 ? How good PCs Go Bad Lesson 2 explains the various mechanisms that malware uses to infect and stay on your computer. It then guides you through ejecting these uninvited guests and preventing their return.Lesson 3 ? The Particles of Protection Lesson 3 will provide resources for the various products that are available to help you protect your environment.Lesson 4 ? Commonsense Rules for Safe Computing This lesson covers the development of an overall safe computing environment. It covers best practices for safe computing.Lesson 5 ? Safety Is a Matter of Routine As you return to your own classroom to use safe computing, it is important to practice the habits you learned. This lesson suggests ways you can easily can keep the computing environment safe in your everyday classroom life.

- Recognizing when a Trojan Horse, a virus adware or spyware has invaded your computer
- Getting the tools that can cure an infection
- Digging into the Windows Registry to remove the nastiest of bugs
- Preventing a recurrence with personal firewalls and protective software
- Dealing with the onslaught of spam
- Keeping your defenses up-to-date
