- L asked: How does a supervisor deal with a new director who has a "Napoleon" complex? The supervisor has worked for years with glowing performance reviews each year until this director came aboard. Since then, the director has decided he wants new "blood" in the organization and undermines the supervisor's credibility at every turn. In his last review, he made a statement that the supervisor has created an culture of "No," in what his department can or can't do. (This is an IT department at a state university.) Because it is contrary to all past performance reviews, he (supervisor) asked for specifics. The answer was, "I'm not giving you names, but this is from HUNDREDS!" The supervisor strongly disagrees with this but feels helpless to rebut this. What is the best way to respond to this director? It is my understanding that in order to acknowledge an issue, there needs to be some constructive, detailed feedback regarding specific instances. Is this supervisor being "insubordinate" in requesting this? It seems this director uses a "Tell" management style, and is creating a very unhappy work environment for those unfortunate enough to work for him.
