Crisis Intervention Team Training for Law Enforcement for the 21st Century

Lorman Education Services
Training Provided by Lorman Education Services nEstimates run as high as 1 in 5 (20%) of 911 emergency calls to law enforcement involve some component of mental illness component and many reach crisis level. Typical law enforcement training is focused on projecting authoritative persona, command and control, and follow my directions or else. These tactics often lead to use of force and injury for all involved parties. Some lead to litigation and failure to train is often invoked in allegations when alternative crisis intervention team techniques might have succeed in resolution of the encounter without use of force. Training law enforcement in CIT has existed for more than two decades and more than 400 agencies have some form of CIT. Budget cuts and depletion of manpower are often cited for not having police programs in place. With the growing population of citizens with mental illness and/or substance abuse, developmental disabilities, and juvenile and elderly issues, law enforcement will continue to be called to interact and resolve these situations. CIT training is highly effective and self evident, and yet a fair amount of skepticism and opposition about its utility still exists.
