In this course participants will embark on a journey of discovering key issues as to what female leadership entails and what being emotionally intelligent women in an organisation means. Through this course they will develop a deeper understanding of where they are in their lives on a personal and professional level. The course aims to motivate women by setting goals and targets for themselves in their organisations, so as to improve their own performance. It assists them to prioritise their personal growth and effectively manage their stress. One of the key issues will be to manage the balance between family and work life. In addition this workshop weaves in key issues crucial to women in leadership and management positions in the workplace. The course focuses on the a soft skillsa of leadership styles, personal empowerment, working with teams, delegating and decision making and creating a positive working environment. In addition it focuses on how to become a strategic manager. Strategic leaders and managers are able to mobilize and focus resources and energy on things that make a difference and will position themselves for success in the future. They are able to translate vision into strategy and then implement the strategy. This last module equips participants with the skills to develop a strategy for their own organisation, unit or department and detailed action plans. Who should attend The course is intended for women in middle and top management positions in industry, business, government and NGOa s. Both young and older women will benefit, learn and gain knowledge through the experiential techniques, methods and activities used in the course.

At the end of this course, the learner should:

Unit 1: Personal Development: Self esteem, self motivation and assertiveness

* Be confident in her own ability to overcome obstacles in her own life.
* Be able to display a positive self image and positive attitude.
* Have improved their self motivation skills in their personal lives and as leaders.
* Understand the contributing factors to their own personal and leadership development.
* Have grown in their self awareness and understanding of their selves.
* Have developed a plan for improving their self-esteem.
* Have an understanding of their emotional competencies including their personal and social competencies.
* Have developed the skills for assertive behaviour.

Unit 2: Leadership styles and leading teams

* Understand the contributing factors to their own leadership development.
* Understand their own leadership qualities and styles.
* Understand how masculine and feminine leadership styles are different.
* Explain the concept of leadership and be able to differentiate between the concepts of leadership and management.
* Be able to diagnose the leadership needs of the people in their business unit.
* Be able to apply situational leadership techniques to individuals and teams within the work context.
* Be able to motivate a team and provide feedback to a team.
* Be able to recognise team member performance and motivate staff.
* Be able to encourage participation in decision-making.
* Be able to delegate tasks.
* Review decisions and the progress with delegated tasks.

Unit 3: A Model for Women in Leadership

* Understand the policy framework protecting the rights and empowerment of women.
* Understand the implications of the multiple roles women play in society.
* Understand the meaning of patriarchy and identify the qualities of a non- patriarchal workplace.
* Understand the concept of the 'glass ceiling' and it s implications.
* Developed a strategy for not falling into the superwoman trap.
* Apply tools for managing their personal and family support systems.

Unit 4: Stress and time management

* Be able to reviewing their work life balance.
* Develop ways of managing conflict that emerges from work, family tensions in their lives.
* Be able to describe stress in personal life and work situations.
* Have analysed the causes of stress in personal life and work situations.
* Be able to describe typical reactions to stress.
* Apply strategies to manage stress in personal life and work situations.
* Be able to set realistic goals for tasks and activities.
* Be able to prioritise tasks and activities in order to plan time.
* Able to draw up a plan/ schedule to organise tasks and activities.
* Be able to carry out tasks and activities as planned.

Unit 5: Strategic Planning using the Balance Score Card

* Understand and apply the Balanced Scorecard Approach to developing a strategy.
* Develop a vision and mission statement for a department.
* Conduct a stakeholder analysis.
* Develop Strategic Objectives in line with organisational strategy and a strategy map.
* Develop Key Performance Indicators (KPI s) in line with their organisations objectives.
* Identify projects which will achieve the organisations strategic objectives.
* Develop action plans which show tasks, responsibilities, timeframes, performance measures and resource needs.
* Communicate action plans to stakeholders and team members.
* Implement according to action plans.
* Monitor and evaluate strategy.
