This BYTSYZ online course will enable students to have a clear understanding of the concept of vulnerability and the safeguarding of vulnerable adults in a range of care settings, some of which are regulated under the Care Standards Act 2000. The qualification provides a detailed examination of the Protection of Vulnerable Adults (PoVA) framework and its implementation process.
The study will focus in detail on the various forms that abuse can take, whilst distinguishing between its types and patterns. Students will consider the definition of adult abuse and develop a clear understanding of who is a vulnerable adult and who the potential abusers are.
The course will enable students to recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse by working through some real-life scenarios to develop understanding and the actions to be taken where abuse is disclosed.

Course Objectives
- Explain the concepts of protection and vulnerability
- Define the terms "vulnerable adults" and "protection of adults" and identify the scope of health and social care settings where adults can be at risk
- Explain the concept of the Protection of Vulnerable Adults (PoVA) in a care setting
- Define the term "abuse" distinguishing between the various patterns of abuse
- Recognise the types of abuse and their related signs
- Identify the range of people who may be potential abusers in given contexts
- Describe the key points of government legislation and regulation to protect vulnerable adults
- Explain in detail the content and implications of the "No Secrets" document
- Explain the risk management process and its importance
- Identify the organisational issues involved in implementing the requirements of PoVA
- Explain the importance of reporting and whistle blowing on actual or potential abuse
- Take personal action to, reduce the risk to and protection of, vulnerable adults in your care
