DRIVER SAFETY
- It begins with making sure your vehicle is safe to drive:
o Check under the hood: oil, loose cables and wires ..look for anything obviously out of place.
o Check the outside of the vehicle: tire inflation and tire tread. Damage to the vehicle you were not already aware of. Check the position of your vehicle: are you boxed in? Any kids in the area?
o Inside the vehicle: check your mirrors, seat position, put on your seatbelt
(for professional drivers you may need to check for fire extinguishers, on road emergency kit, vehicle inspection cards, etc)
- Moving into traffic:
o check for on-coming traffic using left-right-left head movement. Signal your intent and merge safely.
- Moving with traffic: this section is pulled directly from The Smith System I didn t invent it.
o Keep your eyes moving
o Aim High in Steering
o Get the Big Picture
o Leave Yourself An Out
o Make Sure They See You
- Parking the Vehicle:
o Plan your exit before you park the vehicle (don t box yourself in)
o Avoid backing
o If you must back the vehicle, back to your sighted side
o Park in the direction your vehicle will be moving when you leave your parking area. (so you don t have to back).
o Coaching the driver on how to back into a parking space (some methods are safer than others)
- Exiting the Vehicle (this would be for professional drivers)
o Emphasize having a vehicle shutdown routine (decreases injuries)
