Hypno-Doula Training for Doulas and Midwives
As a Doula or Midwife, you are privileged to accompany women through one of life's most remarkable, life-changing experiences; childbirth. Some of your clients have unique needs, and if you have the desire to help them to their best advantage, read on!
Doulas and midwives are such wonderful, amazing women, and I believe that every expectant woman would do well to have them in attendance when they give birth. Did you know? - Regular doula training and labor-assistance techniques for natural childbirth may not be the best ones for many Hypno-moms. For instance, much of what a traditionally trained doula or midwife does to help the mom obtain more comfort during labor is very physical, and in a hypnotic childbirth experience, most physical and emotional comfort comes directly from going deeper into hypnosis by way of a number of cues and relaxation techniques as well as post-hypnotic suggestions.
Couples using birth hypnosis have special needs and there is much you can do to enhance their childbirth experience. I invite you to learn as much as you can for the sake of these wonderful young couples and their Hypno-babies!
In our Hypno-Doula Workshop, You will learn:
* What hypnosis is and how it is used in pregnancy, labor and birth
* What Birth Hypnosis Programs are currently available
* How your clienta s history affects their birth hypnosis experience
* How Hypnosis affects your client's belief systems, emotional state and bodily functions
* How her dominant senses can change her birth experience
* The Amazing Power of Words
* The unique challenges and needs of a Hypno-birthing couple
* Specific language related to birth hypnosis
* How to assess hypnotic depth and mental anesthesia in your clients
* Hypnotic Deepening techniques for the Hypno-mom
* Fear Clearing and Pain Elimination Techniques
* Instant Cues for entering hypnosis - invaluable!
* Birth Ball Techniques for Hypno-moms
* Caregivers and Hypno-birth: reactions and solutions
Each birthing woman is unique, and as you nurture your Hypno-clients through an easier and more comfortable childbirth, everyone will appreciate the time you took to learn these new skills.
Included with your Hypno-Doula Workbook are 8 pages of Hypno-birth Prompts to use with your laboring Hypno-moms (verbal cues to keep them in hypnosis as they labor) a Hypnobabies CD to help your regular hypno-birth clients enter hypnosis instantly, (Entering Hypnosis with a Special Word Cue) and the same script on paper for direct use with clients during prenatal meetings for a more personal approach.
**PLEASE NOTE: Our Hypno-Doula Workbook will *not* teach you to become a Hypnobabies Childbirth Instructor, or a teacher of any other birth hypnosis method. It does not allow you to train expectant mothers to use childbirth hypnosis. It trains you to *help* birthing mothers who are using childbirth hypnosis to have a much easier childbirth experience, using their own Hypno-tools and techniques to the maximum benefit. You become a Hypno-Doula!

FAQ s about our Hypno-Doula Workshop for doulas and midwives:
Q) Is it really important to learn different techniques when a woman is using hypnosis for childbirth?
A) Yes Your Hypno-birth clients have learned a new belief system about childbirth; that it does not have to be a painful experience, that it can be much easier by using the power of their inner mind. Labor and birth then, have ceased to be "hard work" to a Hypno-Mom and she is now using specific words and cues that act as instant comfort measures, emotionally and physically. She needs to be fully supported in these new concepts, words and Hypno-tools to be able to fully benefit from her childbirth hypnosis training. You can help
Q) Can childbirth hypnosis clients still use positional changes during labor and walk around to help their babies descend, being mobile and communicative?
A) They can if they are using Hypnobabies We have what is called, "Eyes Open Childbirth Hypnosis", which has built-in hypnotic suggestions which allow our Hypno-Moms to walk, talk, move around freely and easily communicate with their birth team and caregivers, yet remain fully in hypnosis, relaxed and comfortable in any position. Other birth hypnosis programs require that the birthing mothers remain less active to retain relaxation skills and hypnosis techniques.
For most natural childbirth situations, traditional labor-assistance techniques provide the birthing woman with much more physical activity to stay comfortable, yet it is important for all doulas and midwives to learn that using hypnosis entails much more "inner work" and specific cues that have been programmed subconsciously. Hypnobabies moms can indeed use upright positions, birth balls and walk if they want to, but this will be for progress if needed or descent and positioning of the baby, and not to maintain comfort. Labor assistants who are familiar with all of this can easily help the birthing woman in the ways she truly needs to give birth using hypnosis.
Q) Can I learn to do this easily?
A) Yes Our Hypno-Doula Workshop provides you with important information on hypnosis, how it is used in childbirth, who it works best for and how to help those using both Hypnobabies and regular Hypno-birth techniques. It allows you to learn what the main Hypno-tools are in these programs, and directs you how to do a Birthing Rehearsal with your clients, providing you all a chance to work together by using them, long before the birthing day comes. We also encourage you to learn as much as you can about your Hypno-client s childbirth hypnosis program, by listening to some of their Hypno-CDs and reading the handouts and other materials provided to them in their Hypno-course, so that you can become completely familiar with the philosophy, techniques and cue words that are the main "tools" they will be using during labor.
Q) Will MY job as a doula really be that much easier if I become a Hypno-Doula?
A) WOW, Yes. You cannot imagine how much easier, more fun and gratifying it is to help your doula/ midwifery client when you know the words, cues, techniques and the philosophy/ training behind what they are doing. Labors are shorter and less complicated when the Hypno-mom is fully supported in the way she needs to be and you may find yourself wanting to *only* work with Hypno-clients in the future
Please see our article below, written by a traditionally trained doula that has been in the birthing field for over 26 years, and who is now a Hypno-Doula
I am a HYPNO-Doula.
by Carole Thorpe
I assist women with hypnosis techniques for painless childbirth without drugs. I see women give birth in confidence, peacefully, awake and fully aware of the sensations of birth, in tune with their babies, and in control of their birthing bodies. I watch fathers assume their unique role of hypno-birth partner with confidence and quiet reverence. I see babies who are not drugged, who are strong and attentive at the moment of birth. This all occurs without fear, stress or struggle for the couple, for their baby, or their Hypno-Doula. Calm, peace, quiet, and tender loving kindness reign supreme in these couples birthing rooms. So, for me, being a Hypno-Doula is rewarding beyond belief.
Long before any of us were called doulas, I taught my version of the "Best of Bradley & Lamaze" natural childbirth classes to hundreds of couples. I assisted at their births as a midwife/ birth assistant for a doctor who specialized in home and birth center births. I had the immeasurable honor, and indescribable pleasure of catching a few of those babies myself. Those moms were in control of their birthing bodies, and stoic, even peaceful, in spite of what they were experiencing physically. Their babies were alert and amazingly strong, and breastfed immediately after birth. In short, I had the rarefied experience of assisting with hundreds of NORMAL births. No interventions, no medications, no hospital beds with stirrups...350 normal births. I assisted at the natural births of 3 sets of twins, and 2 babies who decided that breech was the way to come into the world. I am so very thankful for my unique background with childbirth, and the range of experience I bring to the profession called "doula".
Then I became a certified childbirth doula, or what I now think of as a "traditional doula", and for the first time, I began attending hospital births. I attended the births of women who had been taught "what to expect" in their preparation for childbirth classes. I helped those women to "manage the pain" of childbirth, and to "cope with the inevitable pain". Pain that mothers learned was "pain with a purpose". Pain that mothers were told would ultimately bring their babies to them.
I offered women comfort measures; back rubs, foot massages, cool cloths on their foreheads, counter pressure on their lower backs, hip squeezes, etc. I helped them with optimal positioning, and reminded them to eat and drink, and pee at the appropriate intervals, and I commiserated with their plight. I reassured them of the normalcy of childbirth, and did everything I knew to help them achieve natural childbirth in the face of that inevitable, daunting pain.
When I was a traditional doula, I would come home from many a birth with bruises on my hands or wrists where moms had clung to me in their fear, and in their anticipation of the next contraction. I would come home sometimes, and cry about how these births were so technological, and devoid of tender loving kindness and reverence. But the moms seemed happy enough, and dads were happy because they had their newborn prizes, and caregivers were pleased with the "outcomes", but I knew in my heart that these births were far from natural, and much less than normal. The natural childbirth methods they had been taught were many times useless.
So, not surprisingly, some of these moms "ended up with an epidural" with its resultant fluid loading and swelling. The kind of soft tissue swelling that makes pushing a baby through the birth canal nearly an impossibility, because the mother now has no urge to push, and she has been rendered immobile, with a catheter in place. Since mom was now paralyzed from the waist down, any positioning tricks I knew to help babies rotate and descend, were worthless. I was distressed every time I had to witness the effects of medication on the birthing process. I was distressed that I could do nothing besides wait, watch the mother sleep through her medicated haze, and hope that the outcome would be good.
Of course, I still assisted the occasional, stoic, peaceful mom who gave birth to her baby naturally, albeit in pain...BUT, when I assisted my first Hypnobabies couple as their Hypno-Doula, I learned that birth could not only be natural and unmedicated, but that it could also be comfortable for moms...even pain-free I was on my way to becoming a Hypno-Doula exclusively. Once again, I was assisting at NORMAL births. I was observing that Hypnobabies births were easier for moms, easier for birth partners, certainly easier and more peaceful for the babies...and, you know who else these births were easier on?...the DOULA This is heaven, I thought to myself. I now teach women to use self-hypnosis techniques, to enter a profoundly deep state of relaxation, which automatically induces a kind of natural anesthetic sensation in the body, due to endorphins, and serotonins, and other relaxation hormones flooding the body.
I assist moms in directing that sensation throughout their bodies, to exactly where they need it, and I do this with my "tender-loving-kindness" voice. I describe to them, all the details of their Special Safe Place, and remind them to "be there now with their babies, safe and comfortable". In fact, I remind moms, "with every breath as you exhale, you go even deeper into relaxation and comfort, and the more you relax the more comfort you feel, the deeper into hypnosis you can go, and the more powerful your anesthesia becomes", etc. I now use these beautiful hypnosis tools to assist moms, and their partners and their babies to have the births that every woman dreams of...unmedicated, awake and aware, in tune with her body, and in complete control of her baby's natural, normal birthing.
As a Hypno-Doula, I have many highly effective "tools" to assist moms with natural birth. I have word cues that instantly help the mom to enter hypnosis and become comfortable. I can use her deep state of hypnosis to suggest that she create "whatever she needs for herself or her baby" in the moment. "With every breath, as you inhale, you inhale peace and comfort, and as you exhale you breathe away tension". "Peace...and powerful anesthesia, instantly, automatically flows through you from the top of your head all the way down to the tips of your toes...and, you go deeper now".
There are physical cues that work wonderfully as well. I can press firmly on a Hypnobabies-trained mother's shoulder and create an instant relaxation response due to her hypnosis programming, and all the muscles around her baby go loose and limp and lazy. NO tension...NO fear...NO pain here I still offer cool cloths, and foot rubs, and other comfort measures, but not as a distraction measure to sidetrack, or minimize mom's perception of pain, but rather as an offering of loving attendance. I now help to eliminate pain in childbirth, not just mitigate it. 70 of Hypnobabies moms experience NO PAIN. Most of the rest experience only mild to moderate degrees of discomfort, and they are able to manage that easily with their hypnosis techniques.
And, the best thing is...these moms can open their eyes while in hypnosis, move into positions that are favorable for birth's natural progression, and remain perfectly comfortable. No more waiting interminable hours for an epidural to wear off enough for the mother to push On the average, a mom using hypnosis techniques for her birthing, gives birth in less time than those moms who are experiencing fear and pain, and who are medicated. Without fear, tension, and pain, a woman can birth her baby easily and quickly, another plus to being a Hypno-Doula
So, I am hear to tell you that being a traditional doula and helping a woman to become empowered by the suffering she endured while bringing her baby into the world, can never compare to being a Hypno-Doula and hearing a woman say, "I did it It worked No pain " (this, as she lifts her baby up and onto her chest, just seconds after birthing him into her own hands). Nothing I experienced as a traditional doula compares to the time when a doctor motioned me over to a corner of the delivery room, after he had witnessed a first-time mom give birth with a peaceful smile on her face, as she appeared to nap in between pushes, and then, open her eyes and gently push her baby out, slowly, in full control, without pain, knowing when to ease up and allow her baby just slip out of her body...and then hearing that doctor say to me, "That's the most amazing thing I have ever seen".
I most certainly agree, but it is not the single most amazing thing I have ever seen. I get to attend the most amazing births all the time, and for that I am grateful. I love my "work"
Yours in gentle birthing,
Carole Thorpe, CHT, CD, HCHI, CLEC
