This classroom course covers basic ECG measurements, basic arrhythmias and the administration of appropriate drugs within the American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) algorithms.
The AHAa ™s ECG & Pharmacology Course has been updated to reflect the 2015 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC. This classroom-based, Facilitator-led course is designed to improve electrocardiogram (ECG) recognition skills and pharmacology knowledge for treating cardiovascular emergencies.
This course is for healthcare professionals who participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, and others who require this specialized knowledge for their job.
Course Content
Basic electrophysiology
Normal ECG measurements
Basic arrhythmias
Administration of appropriate drugs within the ACLS algorithms
The ECG and Pharmacology course was created because ECG recognition skills and drug treatment knowledge have been identified as key gaps in knowledge for Advanced Cardiac Life Support students.
The American Heart Association recognized that without strong competency in either ECG recognition or drug treatment knowledge related to the ACLS algorithms, achievement of ACLS certification for the healthcare provider is more difficult.
As a result, this course was created to address those knowledge gaps and serve as a precourse option for ACLS students who have been identified through the ACLS Precourse Self-assessment as needing to improve ECG recognition skills and drug treatment, or for ACLS students who in general need to refresh their skills and knowledge. It was also created for anyone wanting to gain knowledge in ECG recognition and pharmacology.
This is an excellent Pre-Advanced Cardiac Life Support Course, or for those who work on monitored cardiac units. Objectives for the ECG module:
1. Explain heart anatomy and basic electrophysiology
2. Explain normal ECG measurements
3. Recognize and understand basic arrhythmias
Objectives for the Pharmacology module:
1. Know basic ACLS drugs and usage
2. Understand drugs, doses and routes of administration during cardiovascular emergencies
3. Learn to integrate basic drug pharmacology into ACLS algorithms.
The course contains two modules, ECG and Pharmacology, which may be taught separately or combined into one course.
The ECG module takes approximately 3. 5 hours to complete, while the Pharmacology module takes about 2. 75 hours to complete.
When taught together, the estimated course length is 6. 25 hours without breaks.
Upon successful completion of each module, students will receive an American Heart Association (AHA) Certificate of Completion. Completion of this course does not result in an American Heart Association (AHA) course completion card.
