THE PROBLEM
I have found no structured exercises in the San Francisco Bay Area that address cognitive training for senior citizens. Occasionally a seminar on memory is provided.
A study (JAMA, November 13, 2002) involving over 2,800 participants (ages 65 to 94) concluded that the effectiveness and durability of cognitive training interventions improved the targeted cognitive abilities. The results of the study suggest that "these interventions have the potential to reverse age-related decline."
Another study (NEJM, June 19, 2003) of 469 people (older than 75) concluded that regular pastimes that stretch the mind significantly lowered the risk of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and dementia. Physical exercise by itself does not reduce the risk.
THE SOLUTION
The paper and pencil exercises I provide stretch the mind thereby helping seniors reduce the risk of AD and dementia.
"Use it or Lose it" Mental Exercises for Senior Citizens instructor led traininggroup study and discussion : Paper and pencil exercises that challenge and stretch the mind. Mental exercise has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of Alzheimer's. I provide a 7-level series of exercises that accomplishes that objective. Each level consists of 12 one-hour weekly sessions. A person taking a new level each year will never see the same exercise twice in seven years.
