James Buford Tune and Judy, his wife of 40 years, formed The Academy of Personal Protection and Security, Inc. (APPS) in 1994 to fill a void of professional training for security officers and handgun permits in Tennessee. Since then, APPS has trained not only security officers, but is also the top rated school in Tennessee for citizens to obtain their handgun carry permits. APPS also has trained many law-enforcement agencies and officers and gives presentations to companies, clubs and organizations on building and property safety, workplace violence, street survival, rape defense and other security related issues.
When APPS first came into being, I made up my mind that I was going to give the people more training than was required, says Tune. APPS teaches the common sense tactics that work without all of the hoopla that you get with some instructors. We teach from the heart and we take the students limitations and novice skills into account, but everyone is taught the same way regardless of skill level.
Buford is a former Metro Nashville police officer who was assigned to the Special Operations Divisions/ Tactical Squad. He worked on the Bomb Squad and Dignitary Protection Team and served as Special Investigator to the District Attorney s office. He also worked many special assignments with the F. B. I./A. T. F./Secret Service, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Buford is also a long-time board member of the Governors Board for Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Private Protective Services and works very close with many security organizations and government agencies on security matters. He was recently appointed to the Emergency Communications Board by the Mayor of Nashville and holds numerous licenses and certifications in the field of self defense and security issues.
