Course Description
Based on John Spence s extensive personal business experience and combined with more than 10 years of in-depth research and rigorous benchmarking studies of the best practices at top corporations around the world, this intensive one-day workshop is designed specifically to shake up the thinking of your key managers by exposing them to the most innovative ideas, tools and methods for improving the revenues, profitability and market share of your organization.
In just the past five years John Spence has presented this seminar to more than 200 CEOs of companies from $2 million to $250 million and also to management teams from organizations such as State Farm, Allstate, Merrill Lynch, Northrop Grumman, Pepsi, Sun Trust, Tropicana, Fidelity Information Services, Frito Lay, Kinko s, and Alltel. These companies chose to invest in Achieving Business Excellence because they wanted real-life answers to their business issues, presented by an instructor with the background and credibility to make their people take the information seriously. They demanded a no-fluff program that would deliver truly valuable information and challenge their people to take an honest look at their current performance and make a serious commitment to realistic and executable improvements.
Workshop Agenda:
This fast paced and engaging program is taught as a mixture of lecture, group discussion, and both individual and group workshops. The first four hours of the class focus on deeply understanding the fundamentals of what it actually takes to achieve excellence in business. Using a custom workbook full of clear examples and proven processes from companies such as Microsoft, Dell, GE, IBM, Apple, Intel, Disney, Wal Mart, Toyota, Allied Signal, Porsche and many other respected firms, attendees will delve into exactly how these organizations pursue, achieve and sustain competitive excellence. But more than just presenting theories or case studies, John has actually worked on multi-year engagements with several of these organizations and will share specific business examples and personal anecdotes from his work with the leaders of these top companies to help your people apply these ideas directly to your current business situation.
Additionally, throughout this first half of the workshop the group will be asked to take several short audits to compare the current performance of your company directly against the key success factors of the benchmark companies. The results of these audits are typically startling and help managers to realize that there is significant room for improvement within your organization. At the close of part one of the session, each participant completes a Personal Action Plan to take the ideas and techniques they have learned and implement them immediately in how they approach their job.
** A few weeks prior to the session, all attendees will be asked to take a specially designed 30-40 question Organizational Effectiveness Audit that is deployed via a simple to use web-based surveying tool. This survey focuses on a number of key attributes that John s research has identified as critical success factors for building a great company. The audit is 100% confidential and all of the findings will be compiled into an executive overview for use during part two of the workshop.
During the second half of the day, the group will be broken up into small teams. Each team is given the task of studying all of the information from the morning s session, the work they each did on their Personal Action Plans and the findings of the Organizational Effectiveness Audit in order to develop a list of their best recommendations for specific action steps to improve the success of the company. The conversation and debate among the teams is often spirited as members compare and contrast their various scores and explore the findings of the audit. By design, this part of the program forces the groups to put difficult topics front and center and deal with specifically how to address them. At the close of the session, each team presents their ideas and recommendations to the entire group. During these team presentations John will focus on important teaching points and help synthesize all of the presentations into one coherent and compelling plan for positive change in your organization.
At the end of the day your team will:
Learn dozens of ideas and strategies from top companies on how to improve the revenues, profitability and market share of your company.
Recognize from this information that there are many great opportunities for real improvements in your business.
Be motivated to teach and implement these ideas throughout your organization.
Identify specifically what they must do every day to be more effective as a team member and leader.
Have a clear understanding of the critical importance of disciplined execution and high levels of accountability to the success of your company and their careers.
Develop a set of specific actions steps to take what they have learned in this session and put it to use immediately.
