- T asked: Dear Sir / Madam I have been reviewing your web site and I am very interested in what you offer. However to ensure that I select the correct courses for my purpose I would ask for some additional information and advice. To introduce myself my name is , I am years of age, I am not an academic and I am determined to enter the construction world. With my father I intend to establish a house renovation service with the possibility to move toward new build at a later stage. I am currently working free of charge with a local and like builder to gain practical experience and knowledge however I would like to supplement this with some more formal training and to gain any necessary certifications. Whilst not focusing my career in any one discipline I would like to have the knowledge and capability to undertake those common trades associated with house renovation. I would like to phase the various aspects of training over at least a one year period, with the intent of: a Awareness of the trade through on site involvement with my building mentor a then undertaking formal training with yourselves a then applying back in the work environment before progressing to the next trade. a Having gained necessary training in the first year then intend to secure my first real house renovation and to go alone in applying these skills learnt and supplementing with any addition theory and training I might need. Basically I have had no luck in getting a formal apprenticeship so my Father and I have decided to construct a process of apprenticeship ourselves and I would ask that you provide some advise to me as to the most beneficial courses I should attend in order that I may achieve my aims. The areas that I wish to accomplish are as follows . Electrical a. The ability to undertake the complete rewiring of a house in terms of power / lighting and ancillary work associated with heating systems b. The ability to self certify this work c. Recognising that with a refurbishment I may only have to undertake a partial rewiring with new lighting sockets etc I am assuming that if I understand the process for a new build then this could be equally applied to a renovation project . Plumbing a. The ability to undertake the plumbing of a new build with the same expectations as item b. Installation of cold / hot supplies a installation of sanitary ware a installation of waste water and sewage systems a central heating systems c. I do not wish to be accredited as safe gas but would like to be able to carry out as much work as possible for pre installation of boiler ( hence the reference above regarding electrics) In addition to these areas I might want to take onboard other areas which at the moment I am hoping I will learn initially on site with my mentor builder these would include: . Brick laying a. Techniques involved in brick laying . Plastering a. As above . Carpentry a. Roof construction b. Stud wall construction c. Fitments etc I recognise this is a full list however as I say my expectation is to conduct these activities over an extended period a I would like to start by the middle of October so perhaps you could let me know what availability you might have. I would be particularly interested in hearing from you as to what course I should undertake and particularly if a more tailor made course could be provided.
