When you are improvising on stage you are creating something out of nothing in a dynamic situation where you know immediately whether you are winning hearts and minds. You must listen and accept gifts. You have to field curveballs and accept the unknown gracefully. It is natural to fight for the status quo, but improv is about moving forward together with a common focus and goal.
Since this is something that does not come easily for most, improv games and exercises have been created to help improvisers learn these skills and utilize them in nerve-racking situations. These skills are imperatives in improv, but also in any situation where teamwork, thinking on your feet, collaborating or working in an ever-changing environment, to name a few, would be of a benefit.
