Investigative Statement Analysis; Truth through what they S. A.I. D.
Knowing when people are telling the truth or lying is a critical skill for investigators, but most often their accuracy is the same as flipping a coin; roughly 50 . Academic research suggests that investigators would be more successful at detecting deception if they focused on the words people use rather than other commonly used cues, which may mislead the investigator. This 3-day training program is a comprehensive course on Investigative Statement Analysis utilizing our unique S. A.I. D. method, providing the investigator with skills to gather and assess information from people effectively and to distinguish between truthfulness and deception within language whether it s written such as statements, transcripts, notes and memos, or oral during interviews, interrogations, and 911 calls. Investigators will gain insight into the individuals thought process and obtain a powerful tactical & psychological advantage during interviews and interrogations and reach accurate conclusions relating to the veracity of the information people provide. This training provides proven techniques to help investigators identify deception as well as truthfulness within language. Students will learn the psychological differences between the truthful and deceptive mindset and how stress associated with deception often manifests subconsciously within the individuals choice of words. Many times even the motive for the crime will be identified through careful analysis, which often goes undetected by investigators who have not received training in this powerful technique. This course is hands-on and students learn through individual and group exercises with real-world cases. If you don t know what to look for you don t know what you re missing in your interviews, interrogations and statements
Investigative Statement Analysis; Patrol & First Responders
This 1-Day course on Investigative Statement Analysis trains patrol officers and first responders to effectively gather information from people and assess their language to help distinguish between truthful and deceptive information, which is a critical skill for patrol officers This training will improve the student s interview and interrogation skills as well as their ability to assess the credibility of what people say during interviews, traffic stops, neighborhood canvasses and in written statements. The initial interviews and statements obtained by the patrol force set the foundation for the entire investigation and pave the way for a successful outcome. If the initial information is obtained incorrectly, misread or contaminated by inappropriate questioning from the beginning, the investigation can end up being sidetracked, wasting time and money, and end up being suspended without appropriate closure. This training provides the students with the skills necessary to secure and assess the initial information from victims, witnesses and potential suspects effectively, which will set a solid foundation and improve their investigations as well as allow for effective follow up by detectives if the cases are passed on.
Cognitive Interviewing
Information from people often initiates an investigation and sets the foundation and direction for everything that follows. Information is the lifeblood of criminal investigations, yet true and accurate recall of information from people is difficult to achieve. In fact, 75 of wrongfully convicted people, convicted of crimes they didn t commit, were based upon faulty eyewitness information Cognitive Interviewing is an investigative interviewing technique that provides greater and more accurate recall of information from victims and witnesses of crimes. This course utilizes class instruction, group exercises and individual practice and application of the techniques learned which greatly improves the ability of investigators to conduct effective information-gathering interviews. Understanding how memory works will not only allow the investigator to gather more accurate information from victims and witnesses, it will also help to shed light on information that is NOT coming from memory and thus, may be deceptive or unreliable. Cognitive Interviewing is one of the most highly researched methods of investigative interviewing drawing international support from the academic community as well as investigators within the field. Students will learn the strengths and weaknesses of human memory, and in so doing, learn techniques to maximize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses. This interactive training program focuses on effective communication and powerful interviewing techniques and strategies to enhance memory and recall from victims and witnesses. This training will develop essential skills for patrol, first responders and investigators. Detectives working cold cases may find these skills especially helpful as memory can degrade over time. This course can be delivered in 1 or 3 day formats.

BELIEF; Narrative-Based Interviewing
Since people tell the truth or lie through the words they use, it makes perfect sense to have words be the focus of an interview program This, however, is NOT a statement analysis course. It is a 3-Day training program that trains the interviewer to focus on verbal information and the story people provide during interviews or interrogations. It is an effective approach for face-to-face interviews or interrogations, and it is also ideal for conducting interviews over the telephone where there are no behavioral indicators to focus on, just their words. The system is based upon the acronym BELIEF, which stands for: B-Build Rapport & Baseline, E-Extract Initial Account, L-Listen/ Look Intently, I-Identify Key Elements & Changes, E-Expand Information, and F-Follow-Up. The acronym BELIEF has a dual benefit as well, in that we start every interview with the belief in the person and what they have to say. The benefits of this are that it is in alignment with our core values that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and it helps eliminate personal bias by giving people the benefit of the doubt as well and helping to prevent contamination of the interview by eliminating signals of doubt or disbelief coming from the interviewer. This approach also maximizes verbal content from the individual, and focuses the investigator on gathering, developing and testing the information obtained during the interview for truthfulness, rather than simply looking for deception. Investigators learn to base their questioning on the information provided by the individual being interviewed rather than relying on a scripted interview process or a series of steps to follow, or a rigid question & answer format. Interviewers also learn to assess the content of the individual s account, rather than rely on their personal opinions or beliefs about the person s behavior and/ or appearance, which can be false or misleading. This narrative-based approach to interviewing provides unexpected and unpredictable questions which are difficult for the subject being interviewed to plan and prepare for, therefore helping to break any mental scripts the individual may have entering the interview process, which is a common tactic of deceptive individuals. This approach also allows for the implementation of tactical and strategic use of evidence as well as employing principles of cognitive interviewing and investigative statement analysis.
Tactical Interviewing & Detecting Deception
This 3-Day training course is designed for patrol officers and detectives to provide them with a variety of tactics and techniques to set a foundation of understanding as well as practical skill enhancement relating to communication, conducting effective interviews & interrogations, detecting deception, improving witness memory and statement analysis techniques. Students will improve their ability to effectively communicate with a variety of people and personalities, build and maintain rapport and conduct effective interviews and interrogations. Students will learn questioning strategies to enhance victim and witness memory and will be introduced to key principles of statement analysis which will help them distinguish between truthfulness and deception in language. We will also shed light on some myths about lie detection and discuss what works and what doesn't when trying to detect deception and lies in other people. Students will learn how to utilize principles of persuasion & influence during interviews and interrogations in an effective and ethical manner as well as other interview and interrogation tactics and strategies, all designed to reach the truth within investigative inquiries.
Micro Expressions and Emotions during Interviews
This 1-Day training course designed to familiarize police detectives and investigators with current research on emotions, micro expressions and facial expressions when communicating with people. Investigators will better understand what these signals may mean and how to use the information during investigative interviews and criminal interrogations. Research has shown that there are seven universal expressions of emotion occurring during true/ felt emotions which the astute investigator may be able to identify during interviews or interrogations. When people lie it is often accompanied with changes in their expressions of emotion through simulating (expressing an un-felt emotion), masking (replacing a felt emotion with a false expression), or neutralizing (inhibiting a true emotion by appearing neutral). The exhibited emotions and micro expressions are often subconscious and difficult for people to hide, but when identified through training, this added knowledge gained by the investigator is able to provide additional insight to help focus questioning and to assist with assessing the credibility of what the individual is saying, and to identify any conflicts or mixed messages in what the individual is conveying.
"Understanding and Interviewing Sexual Deviancy
This 3-day training program will assist interviewers who are tasked with the investigation of sex crimes by aiding their understanding of sexual behavior and the different types of sexual paraphilias and typologies of a sex offender. This training will also assist the interviewer in understanding what sexual deviance is as well as how deviant behavior begins, including why individuals become involved in sexual deviance and who is at risk of becoming a potential victim. Through this training, students will be exposed to the current research which is now being conducted, and discuss current treatment programs that work for sex offenders, and how these treatment programs work in conjunction with probation/ parole agencies in an attempt to better monitor and control sexual deviant behavior. Key areas of training include; types of denial, compulsive sexual behaviors, sexual paraphilial, offender terminology, five stages of successful interviews, analytical discourse, personality traits and psychological defense mechanisms.

Truth, Deception and Effective Communication"
"The business of business is people." That quote from Herb Kelleher, founder and former CEO of Southwest Airlines, is as true today as it has ever been. Although we live in a high-tech world, without solid communication and people skills your sales will suffer, you will fail more often at negotiations, and your business and personnel will never reach their full potential. In this 1-Day training course you will learn techniques which will improve your ability to communicate effectively, develop rapport and evaluate the credibility of what people say. You will learn to establish behavioral baselines in other people and identify the subtle clues in a person's physiology, body language, micro-facial expressions, voice and specific linguistic indicators that can give away their real intent, expose sensitive or hidden information and identify the truth. This training will help you develop the skills and insights used by successful detectives to connect with people, extract information and evaluate the truthfulness and credibility of what they say. These aren't simply detective skills, they are people skills, and the success of you and your business will be improved or hindered by how well you can read and evaluate what people say and do.
Language & Lying"
This half-day program focuses on the words people say and brings to light the difference between truthful and deceptive communication. In business, you talk with people every day, but are you missing what they are really saying? Are you being lied to without knowing it? This training will help you evaluate information, whether you are communicating with your staff and business partners, negotiating a contract, listening to a sales pitch or evaluating the information from a CEO or CFO regarding a potential business merger, acquisition or investment. This training will add value to conversations and communication over telephones, conference calls and internet-based communication as well, since it is based solely on the language and words people use.
Bodies & Baselines"
This half-day program focuses on body language and behavior. Our bodies communicate information, or helps to facilitate communication, with the people we connect with every day in business. This is a two-way street, so in this training we cover both aspects and students learn how to present themselves to others and how to assess other people as it relates to non-verbal communication. Sometimes the words people use conflict with or contradict what their bodies are saying. This leads to mixed-messages and poor communication, and may even be indicative of deception You want your body and your language to carry the same message, but quite often we don t realize there is a conflict. If we don t realize this conflict in ourselves, we certainly will not be able to detect it in other people, leaving us open to communication problems or falling victim to deception. This training will help you understand non-verbal behavior as it relates to you and other people, improving your ability to communicate effectively and to identify potential problems, conflicts or concerns when communication with other people so you can address them effectively.
Communicate to Connect"
This half-day program focuses on communication and rapport. Communication is how business gets done, and rapport is crucial to effective communication. Rapport is not a soft skill, it is a foundational element within all effective communication. When we establish rapport with the people we communicate with in business, whether it s with our staff and business partners, during contract negotiations or within a sales situation, trust increases. Trust is important within virtually all of our relationships, from close, personal relationships with our family and friends, to our everyday business dealings. Police detectives have to build trust and rapport with the likes of gang members, murderers and child molesters to help facilitate communication and reach the truth. These same skills and principles can be applied to improve your communication within your business dealings as well to help facilitate communication, build trust and reach positive outcomes with the people you communicate with.
